Teaching philosophy
What is music?
Hans Christian Anderson once argued, “Where words fail, music speaks.” While music is full of order, logic, and technicality, it also pierces deep into the heart, and it is my desire that students learn to appreciate both the logic and the deeper profound beauty of music.
Who are my students?
I offer lessons for a variety of ages and levels from children to adults and beginners to late intermediate.
How do I teach?
When it comes to curriculum, I often teach from the Alfred series, and, as students progress, we will transition to classical repertoire for our studies. We will learn necessary theory as pertains to current skills being learned. Students will be asked to practice 5 days a week as is fitting to their level in order to gain the most from lessons.
Turning to teaching methods, we will learn the balance between mechanics and musicianship. We will learn many different techniques as well as skills for studying pieces. Students will also be encouraged to use their imaginations. They will be asked to consider the mood, story, or message of different musical pieces in order to draw the listener in and to help produce a delight for music in the student.
